Roof Ventilation Problems in Joplin, MO Can Lead to Warped Decking and Premature Roof Failure

Ridgeline Roofing & Solar recently completed a residential roof inspection in Joplin, Missouri, where what initially appeared to be a simple missing shingle repair uncovered a much larger issue: improper roof ventilation.

Ventilation problems are one of the most overlooked causes of roof deterioration. When airflow systems are not designed correctly, moisture and heat become trapped inside the attic space, eventually leading to warped decking, shortened shingle life, and costly repairs.

Why Roof Ventilation Matters

A properly ventilated roofing system should create balanced airflow throughout the attic or roof cavity.

In most systems:

  • Soffit vents act as the intake
  • Ridge vents act as the exhaust

When designed correctly, cooler air enters through the soffits and exits through the ridge vent, helping regulate temperature and moisture levels inside the structure.

However, when too many ventilation types are mixed together improperly, airflow becomes disrupted.

Too Much Ventilation Can Be a Problem

This home already had:

  • Soffit ventilation
  • Gable vents
  • Ridge vent systems

Instead of improving performance, the combination was actually confusing the airflow.

During the inspection, Ridgeline found that a lower ridge vent section was interfering with the main ventilation pattern. In situations like this:

  • Intake vents can accidentally become exhaust vents
  • Exhaust vents can start pulling air from the wrong areas
  • Moisture and heat become trapped in the decking

The result was severe deck warping, visible directly from the roof surface.

Warped Roof Decking Is a Serious Warning Sign

When roof decking begins to warp, it often indicates long-term moisture buildup or improper attic ventilation.

Common signs include:

  • Uneven roof lines
  • Dips or waves in the decking
  • Buckling shingles
  • Soft spots beneath the roof surface
  • Premature aging of roofing materials

If ignored, these issues can eventually require major structural repairs.

Correcting the Problem the Right Way

Ridgeline Roofing & Solar previously repaired another section of this property by:

  • Removing portions of conflicting ridge vent
  • Properly sectioning ventilation areas
  • Replacing damaged decking
  • Reworking airflow patterns for balanced ventilation

The remaining side of the home is now showing similar symptoms and will require the same corrective process.

Ventilation Is One of the Most Important Parts of a Roof

Many roofing issues blamed on shingles are actually caused by poor airflow. Even high-quality roofing materials can fail early if the ventilation system is not functioning correctly.

Proper ventilation helps:

  • Extend roof lifespan
  • Reduce attic moisture
  • Prevent mold and condensation
  • Improve energy efficiency
  • Protect roof decking and insulation

Don’t Ignore the Warning Signs

Warped decking, missing shingles, and moisture problems rarely fix themselves. Catching ventilation issues early can save homeowners thousands in future roof repairs and replacements.

Video Transcript: "Hey Tim Yates, Ridgeline Roofing. I'm up here with Dave today. We're on the residence end over here
in Joplin and we got a call on a couple of missing shingles over here. So we did this section about
three weeks ago and we had to take off some of the ridge vent and section off some of the gable ends.
You see there because they already have gable vents and they already have soffit vents so it
actually had so much ventilation that it was confusing the air and it wasn't working. So we
got the same kind of issues going on over here and having this ridge vent here lower than the main is
actually creating something crazy right here because this also has soffit ventilation. So the
soffit ventilation is supposed to work as an intake and if you have this along with that it confuses
all this air and that could become your intake or that could become your exhaust and this could become
your intake up here. But whatever is going on isn't working because you can see the deck right here
is warping really bad. So it's definitely going to have to have some of the decking replaced just
like the other side and we're going to change out the ventilation on this to to make it work properly.
And that's about it. So if you got any questions about your roof residential or commercial give us a call. Thanks."
