Why Silicone Roof Coatings Outperform Acrylic on Low-Slope Roofs

At Ridgeline Roofing and Solar, we believe in solutions that last. That’s why we were proud to apply a Polyglass 95.1 silicone spray coating to the Downstream Q store in Joplin, Missouri—right near the Downstream Casino.

This roof, only 6-7 years old, had previously been treated with an acrylic coating. Unfortunately, that coating failed to hold up. Thin and lacking strong bonding agents, acrylic coatings often break down quickly—especially under heavy rain or ponding water.

In contrast, silicone offers superior performance for flat and low-slope roofs. It’s thicker, more durable, and adheres much better to existing surfaces, even in problem areas like ponding zones. On this project, we also built a custom water deflector to correct drainage issues and ensure long-term performance.

If you’ve invested in a roof coating but aren’t seeing results, it may be time for a better solution. Let Ridgeline Roofing and Solar show you how silicone can save you money over time by extending your roof’s life and avoiding premature failure.

Hear Tim’s Thoughts

Video Transcript: "Good morning. Tim Yates, Ridgeline Roofing and Solar. I'm here with Dave and Derek this morning, and we got some guys on the ground. We're getting ready to put a silicone coating on this roof at the Downstream Q store. It's a convenience store low located by Downstream Casino.

You can see casino over there not very far from us. So this roof isn't really that old. It's probably six or seven years old. And what they did is they came in here, and they sprayed an acrylic on it. And this is why, everyone, I don't use acrylics.

Aside from the fact this paper thin, you really don't have the bonding agents and acrylics that you do with silicone. So regardless if you have a, you know, fleece back material for acrylics or whatever, they just don't last. This is what you get. This is what your roof's gonna look like once you pay somebody for an acrylic. And if you think it saves money, it really doesn't.

So, we also had to build, kind of a water deflector on this roof. Had some bad ponding in this area, and you can't weld to this roof. So we went ahead and used a modified to do it. It came out pretty good. With all the rains we had, it really reflected the waters too.

The roof drains like it should, so that that worked out good. So, we're gonna get back at it. We got some you still see some moisture on the roof here. We're gonna get this roof dried out and and and, get this ran today. Hopefully, you get this taken care of.

So if you need any assistance with your roof, commercial or residential, please give us a call. Thank you."
