Understanding Wind Damage: The Zipper Effect on Roofs

High Winds Hit Cuba, MO – Ridgeline Roofing Inspects Storm Damage & Offers Help

When storms strike, Ridgeline Roofing is ready to respond. Tim Yates, founder of Ridgeline, was on-site in Cuba, Missouri following a wave of powerful storms that rolled through the region. While en route to St. Louis, Tim stopped to inspect wind damage to a local roof—what he found was a textbook example of “zippering”, a form of wind damage that compromises shingle integrity.

During the inspection, Tim highlighted an important issue many homeowners don’t realize: even if you have visible wind damage, your insurance company may not cover it if your roof wasn’t nailed correctly to begin with. Improper nailing, poor seal bonds, or pulled-through nails can void your coverage if the manufacturer’s installation specs weren’t followed.

In this case, Tim observed lifted laminates, pulled-through nails, and incorrect nail placement—all symptoms that the roof may be vulnerable, even if it’s not currently leaking.

Ridgeline is currently fielding storm damage calls across Missouri, Kansas, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and possibly Illinois, making this a multi-state recovery effort for the team.

If your home or business experienced wind or hail damage, don’t wait. Get a professional inspection to ensure your roof is safe—and to help support your insurance claim if needed.

We’re always thankful for the opportunity to serve and ready to help you recover from storm damage. It is Ridgeline’s honor to offer quality roofing far beyond our home office located in Joplin, MO.

"Hey. Tim Yates. Ridgeline Roofing and Solar. Hope everybody's safe from the storms yesterday. We just went through Rolla.

It was pretty bad. We're on our way to Saint Louis to look at a few roofs and had this one to look at in Cuba. I wanted to talk to everybody everybody a little bit about wind damage. This is zippering. You can see how this is a zipper effect.

I hope you can see that. Zipper effect with wind damage. It doesn't necessarily mean your insurance company is gonna pay for your roof. What for your roof. What they look for, you can't really see it on this because this roof's nailed incorrectly, but there's nails that that should be here and here in a space.

That nail space is only that nail line only goes about as thick as my finger right there. I hope you can see that. And then it's supposed to be nailed right there and right there, but it's not nailed correctly. So it is the type of thing that could if the manufacturer or the insurance company sends somebody out to to look at this, if it's not nailed correctly and has wind damage, they might just tell them they're out of luck. So, anyway, if if this seal is broke, just because the seal's broke on certain shingles, you see that, sometimes they will bond back down in the heat.

But if the nails are poked through, you can see them now there. It's it's cockeyed and not nailed in the right spot. But, if you see the nails pulled through the shingles on the ends, you know, where you could just pop them up like that, unfortunately, there's no nail there to start with, but that's kinda what they look for. And they look for a specific amount of nails per slope, and, they'll come through and mark the shingles up. This roof's definitely got some some wind issues.

Down here, the laminates have started coming up with all the high winds. It doesn't necessarily mean it's gonna leak, but it definitely definitely isn't doing anything good for the roof. But, yeah, we're we're we've had calls from Missouri, Kansas. All of our offices are busy, Arkansas, Oklahoma, and, possibly even Illinois right now. We're headed that way too.

So, if you guys need any help with your roofs, please give us a call. Thank you very much."
