Cool Roofs for Hot Summers: Polyglass Silicone Coating Delivers Big Energy Savings in Joplin, MO

As temperatures climb into the mid‑90s, rooftops across Missouri are reaching dangerous levels of heat saturation. On July 24, Ridgeline Roofing & Solar responded to the challenge by applying a Polyglass 951 silicone roof coating to an aging commercial building in Joplin, MO, demonstrating just how powerful the right roofing system can be in cutting energy costs and prolonging roof life.

This wasn’t just another coating job. It was a real-world thermal test. Using a digital surface thermometer, Tim Yates measured the original modified bitumen cap sheet at over 169°F. After the Polyglass silicone was applied, that number dropped to just 114°F—a 55-degree temperature swing that translates directly into cooler interior temperatures and reduced load on the building’s HVAC system.

Why Polyglass Silicone is the Right Choice for Aging Roofs

This roof had seen better days. The granules had worn off in several places, UV exposure had begun to discolor the surface, and ponding water was threatening the roof’s structural integrity. A complete tear-off and replacement was one option, but not the only one.

Silicone coating provided the perfect alternative because the existing roof still had solid structural integrity. Instead of removing the entire system, we pressure-washed the surface, reinforced protrusions, and sprayed a thick, seamless silicone layer to seal the roof from future water intrusion.

Silicone coating offers more than just waterproofing. It delivers significant long-term value:

  • Energy Savings: Reflects up to 90% of UV rays, keeping buildings cooler and reducing summer energy bills by up to 33%
  • Affordability: Costs 50% less than full roof replacement, with minimal disruption to business operations
  • Longevity: Includes a 50-Year Material Warranty and Ridgeline’s 10-Year Manufacturer-Backed Workmanship Warranty
  • Versatility: Perfect for flat and low-slope roofs, including TPO, PVC, EPDM, and modified bitumen systems

Hear Tim’s Thoughts

Video Transcript: "Hey. It's Tim Yates, Ridgeline Roofing and Solar. We're at Marmot Fire Protection today. We sure appreciate their continued business. So this modified roof here, it's hot applied, and works good to date.

Polyglass silicone coating on it, Polyglass ninety five one. This is a fifty year material warranty, product, and, I wanted to show how much different the UV benefits are to this roof. So this is the modified cap sheet. Of course, the granules are coming off. It's not supposed to have any of these dark spots in it, but it's showing its age a little bit.

So this is a thermal tester. And if you can see it right there, but it says +1 69. +1 67. Okay. So we got +1 69, +1 67 in this area here.

And going to the silicone area, it is it was one fifteen a while ago. One fourteen. So substantial difference, thermal difference on on the top for sure, and it definitely makes a huge difference on the inside of the buildings. This product here, we're we're manufacturer preferred for this product. So we actually get a 10 workmanship, ten year labor, manufacturer back.

So if anything we do, has a problem, we just get a hold of Polyglass, actually pay us, and they pay for the material to come out and take care of your problem. Kinda crazy, but it's the way it works. So if you need any assistance with your residential or commercial rooms, please give us a call."
